I live in Gloucestershire, but my work is deeply rooted in the physical and mythic landscapes of Cornwall. I am particularly drawn to the region’s ancient rock formations, rich folklore, and layered geological history, and in my practice I try to explore the dialogue between land and legend.
This painting depicts the cave as Nanjizal, near Land’s End in West Cornwall, a location that captivates me both visually and symbolically.
Often called the Song of the Sea, the cave is known for the haunting sound created by the waves echoing within its narrow fissure.
Using oil paint thinned with fluid medium, I aimed to capture the shifting qualities of light, sound, and water inside the cave.
I also incorporated pencil to add delicate detail to the rock formations, contrasting the fluidity of the paint with sharper, more precise lines that emphasise the textures and structures shaped by time and tide.
The combination of materials mirrors the interplay between permanence and change that defines Cornwall’s coastline.
