Sue Jones: Indigo Mood.

Acrylic and Indian Ink on Watercolour Paper.

I am lucky enough to divide my time between the wilds of Dartmoor in Devon, and the woods, creeks and estuaries of the Rame peninsula in South East Cornwall.

My subject matter is thus almost chosen for me, but my practice involves drawing and painting representationally, then going through a process of simplifying and abstracting which results in families of paintings related by the same landscape.

I work in two main mediums, oil paints and inks. I like to have a limited palette and work freely and gesturally at first, allowing myself to get caught up in my subject, before stepping back and refining.

The two mediums are quite different: in oils, I will build a painting using grisaille and then a series of glazes, which require drying time in between, whereas the inks allow for more instant gratification.

Hence, I will often use inks at the beginning of a series to capture a feeling, a sense of place and moment, which I then develop by making several oil paintings, often from crops of the original ink work.
